Prior to contact, Canada’s First People had rich, deep and complex communities and Nations with effective and well functioning governance structures and cultures. Since then, the domination of Aboriginal people, and resulting conflict, has appeared in many forms. There are obvious forms such as physical violence,intimidation, and loss of territory. Less obvious, and some say more damaging, is the loss of identity, which occurs when different systems of thought are contested on an unequal basis.
A community’s loss of local wisdom, familiar metaphors, and self-government models not only limit its collective capacity to make sense of their world, it undermines the self-confidence and self esteem of its members.
