The institute’s courses and its Family series have been accepted by FMC for mediators wishing to attain Certified Family Relations Mediator or Certified Comprehensive Mediator designations.
B.C. Mediator Roster Society
The Mediator Roster is a list of qualified mediators managed by the British Columbia Mediator Roster Society, which was set up by the Attorney General’s office. It is available to lawyers, judges, government agencies, and anyone else who wishes to resolve disputes using mediation. In 2002, the B.C. Mediator Roster Society expanded its list to include qualified family mediators on a separate Family Roster. All mediators on either of these Mediator Rosters must meet the training and experience requirements, and must agree to follow a code of conduct. Every mediator on each Roster must meet stringent requirements.
- A minimum 80 hours of core education in conflict resolution and in mediation theory and skills training (including 24 hours focusing on issues related to family dynamics, for those wishing to be on the Family Roster);
- A minimum 100 additional hours of training in dispute resolution or in a related field;
- A minimum 20 hours of professional development or continuing education every year;
- Completed a minimum of 10 mediations as the only (or primary) mediator (for those wishing to be on the Family Roster, a minimum of 50 mediations are required, including at least 40 family mediations; or FMC Certification;
- Letters of reference;
- Knowledge of Supreme Court procedures;
- Insurance coverage.
